Wasn't sure exactly what to call this, because the pack doesn't really have any established ranks, or at least they don't have a lot of them. Each rank has many different names because their system is so loose and more based on just levels of earned dominance. While it does say leader for the leader rank, other dogs call it Higher, Chief, Boss. While it does say trainee for the new or young one rank, it's also called tenderfoot, initiate, that kinda thing. More or less, Los Sabuesos just has titles for dogs rather than officially recognized rankings. Like thick and skin isn't a place or rank in the pack and they serve the same duties, they just have different titles. Hopefully that makes sense!
LEADER
The leader is a dog who challenged and won against the last leader. The pack believes that through leaders being able to simply challenge and over throw each other, it ensures that the pack only ever has the strongest or wisest dog available. If a leader is to suddenly die, then a dog may step forward, but they may have challengers to succeed into the rank.
The leader could potentially be a tiny terrier, as long as they somehow managed to miraculously win against the previous leader, and if the pack respected them enough to let them remain in the rank unchallenged. Leaders can usually do as they please, after they have organized daily patrols, hunting parties, and guard duties. They place themselves wherever they're needed and often their word is law.
VIEJO
Not an official rank, but more of a title. Dogs in this title tend to just be more dominant and have the best pickings in the pack. They sleep in the backroom of the Shantyplace, where the best carcasses and bedding is hoarded by their fellow Viejos. Dogs who have this title have usually flanked many dogs to earn their respect and place. The leader sometimes can struggle to keep Viejos in line, and most Viejos will try to eventually challenge the leader, whilst others are happy in their rank of being dominant, but not having the responsibilities of the leader.
This rank is named after the pack's first leader, El Viejo.
SABUESO
Simply a dog who has gone through training and has received their mark of a Sabueso. Sabuesos usually know what they need to be doing and they do it; thin furred dogs (skins) tend to patrol and hunt during the day, with thick furred dogs (thicks) patrolling at night. Sabuesos help in any way they are capable, with a chihuahua hunting mice or keeping watch and larger dogs hunting ravens and hares, patrolling further, etc. Size typically determines a Sabueso duty.
Some Sabuesos will be given trainees to train, establishing a Blood Brother bond with them. Blood brothers are a pair that consists of a dog who mentors another younger or newer pack member. They establish this bond first by asking/consenting to it, and then biting their paw pads and rubbing the blood together. All Sabuesos have at least a higher, mentoring blood brother, and some will go on to be a mentor themselves in another bond.
TRAINEE
A dog who is five months or older, or a dog who is new. Trainees are given what is called a blood brother or a blood sister. Blood brothers show trainees the ways of the pack and how to face their desert wilds, and how to fight against other dogs. Trainees train until their blood brother sees they're ready. Some dogs train for just two months, while some have trained for as much as eighteen months. Trainees exit their title when they face their Marking ceremony, which is when the leader suddenly approaches the trainee and throws them down into the dirt to bite them somewhere on their body. The bite leaves a scar, and this scar is known as the Mark of a Sabueso.
CASTIGADO
A dog who has broken the code but is being kept alive for certain reasons. They sleep inside next to dogs who will guard them.
