LEADER - Can be fought for, even if claimed by the second after a leader's death, or if there's a second awaiting the rank. The leader can always be challenged for.
SECOND - A trusted and strong dog elected by the leader. If a leader takes the previous leader's place, they can derank the last leader's second to elect their own.
TENDERFOOT - A rank given to all dogs who have been weaned or dogs who are new. Every tenderfoot is mentored by an older or experienced pack member. After one's 6th moon of training, a tenderfoot is given a task known as a 'trial' by their mentor. These tasks vary depending on the strength of the tenderfoot and the ideas of the mentor. (You can ask OOCly for help coming up with a fun trial!) After this sixth moon and their first trial, the pack member is placed into one of the two rankings we're about to mention. From then on, they fulfill pack duties on the side of training, until their second and final Trial known as their Prueba (proo ay bah). After the completion of the more difficult prueba, a tenderfoot strictly fulfills pack duties. Depending on their performance in their Prueba, a dog may switch between rankings (if they were given duties of a den-guard after their 6 moon trial, but perform with more energy and skill in their Prueba, they may be given the scout rank instead. Or, if one performs in a different manner that isn't adequate for the scout rank, they may lose their scout duties and be forever given the den guard rank.)
DEN GUARD - Although an important rank, most do not find it desirable, and many believe dogs who have performed poorly in their test are given this ranking. It's not desired because den guards don't get to explore and hunt as often as scouts, and instead they must watch over and guard camp with their life. They sit at posts, watching the outer desert, and sometimes must watch pups or keep the sick or injured company. It's less desired, but it's still vital in pack function. Sometimes, den guards may be sent to guard certain areas of the territory for a day or two instead, so they do in fact leave camp. Den guards are expected to be more independent and weary of danger.
SCOUT - Every young or new tenderfoot dreams of running with the pack's scouts. The scouts are often not at camp; they explore and hunt and patrol from sunrise to sunset. Rabid Ridge needs constant defending and watch after all, and so scouts are out and about constantly.
ELDER - When a dog is seen as useless to pack life, they are often killed, because most if not all dogs are still able to at least den-guard. However, the pack never harms their elder or senior dogs, and in fact can often treasure them. After all, it is a rare and wonderful thing if one somehow manages to survive to their older years in this harsh environment. Elders keep the sick or injured or mothers company inside, they give advice, and they watch over pups.
CASTIGADO - A prisoner or punished dog. The pack kills almost all traitors or severe code breakers, or desserters. However, if they feel you have some use or connection to you, or if the leader is feeling a sense of mercy, you may be a Castigado; a dog who is confined to camp by the den guards and lives off scraps. (You may only play a castigado if your character severely breaks the code or tries to dessert the pack, but begs the leader for their life).
- You can be any rank but second or leader, and you must ask permission before being a Castigado.
- f you are a tenderfoot, ask around for a mentor, you two can train and plan the two trials together; it can be a lot of fun for character development on both sides, if you two actually run with it.
- If you choose a den guard, please stick to it; they aren't often out of camp and are deeply committed to guarding the camp. If you grow bored, you can ask the leader OOCly to assign your den guard to border duty with other den guards for a day.
- You can challenge the leader, but you should organize this and ask about it OOC, make sure it's okay; sometimes we need the current leader to finish up a plot before they can be challenged.
